Haji Wan Ibrahim Pak Kadir- Solidarity Scholar

Haji Wan Ibrahim Pak Kadir

Haji Wan Ibrahim was born in 1894 at Bendang Daya, Patani. He was the brother of Pak Da Ail Patani, a famous teacher in Mecca. Since his brother was nicknamed Pak Da, Haji Wan Ibrahim was given the nickname Pak Cu Him. Since he was small, he was brought up by his father in accordance with Islam. He was sent to a religious school in Bermin, Patani.
.
In the year 1912, he furthered his studies in Mecca. While in Mecca, he studied with his uncle, Pak Chik Wan Daud. He was very fluent in the Arabic language as a result of being raised in Mecca. He had a talent for writing Arabic poems, and had a handwritten a book entitled ´Qawaid al-Fiqhiah´. His talent was acknowledged and thus he was given the authority to educate Muslims in Masjidil Haram for several years. Pak Cu Him lived in Mecca for twelve years and met some famous teachers there including Sahibul Fadzilah Sheikh Yahya Patani, Sahibul Fadzilah Tok Ramli, Sahibul Fadzilah Sheikh Muhammad ´Ali Maliki and Sahibukl Fadzilah Sheikh Muhammad Mukhtar al-Jawi.Upon returning to his homeland, Pak Cu Him took over his father-in-law´s pondok (village religious school) at Gajah Mati after marrying the latter´s daughter, Hajah Zainab in 1926.
.
In 14 November 1931, Syeikhul Islam in Kedah, Haji Wan Sulaiman bin Wan Sidek authorized Pak Cu Him to teach religious subjects in Kedah Darul Aman. The pondok at Gajah Mati under his leadership received many positive reactions and the students came all the way from Jambi, Mendailing, Patani, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Perak and Kedah. During its peak, the number of students were as many as 500. In his teachings, Pak Cu Him followed and continued the ways set by Tok Ayah Che´ Dol in Gajah Mati´s pondok (religious shed) that is teaching Arab while giving priority to Arabic Grammar, Morphology (Saraf), Slang (Loghat), Poetry (Syair) and Mantiq. Other subjects such as Divine Unity (Tawhid), Jurisprudence (Fiqh) were also taught by him besides the knowledge of the Qur´an and Hadith.
.
He enjoyed teaching Arabic poetry like Ibnu ´Uqail´s poems which he himself had penned in Arabic, while conversing and teaching. His favourite subjects included Divine Unity (Tawhid) and Origin of Religion (Usuluddin) which made his teachings interesting as he linked some poems to the subjects. The grammar books that he used as guidance in his writings were Sheikh Jamaluddin Ibni Hisham´s book entitled “Syarah Al-Qutur” and “Syarah Al-Syuzur” whereas the Fiqh books that he used were “Al-Tahrir´ and “Fathul-Wahhab” written by Sheikh Zakaria Al-Ansari.
.
In his community, Pak Cu Him was a scholar who emphasised the need for unity. He witnessed how the Middle East Arabs were in complete confusions as they were not united and were reluctant to come to an agreement. He was also worried about the conditions of the Malays in Pattani that were made unsettled by the government of Thailand. Realising these issues, the leader of Mukim Padang Pusing together with the Imams and other leaders of the villages in Mukim, where the pondok Gajah Mati was, gathered to hold a meeting with Tuan Guru Haji Ismail Che´ Dol, Haji Awang (father of Tuan Guru Haji Ahmad Rabat) and Tuan Guru Haji Ahmad Rabat including Pak Cu Him. The goal was to draft a set of ruling to unite people in the district. The treaty of “Jam´iaitul Ittihadiyah” which was signed on 17th August 1926 was also known as (The Union Gathering).
.
The disciples and students of the pondok received clarifications that whoever refused to cooperate with the leaders, imam and Tuan Guru would be punished. Among the punishments were as follows:-
.
1. He will not be visited by anyone when taken ill.
2. Ignore his feast.
3. No one will come to give their condolences during his death except for the two men who
will bury him.
4. No hospitality from the doctors and midwives.
5. His grave to be isolated from other graves.
.
Many conspired to catch those who violated traditional and Shari´ah laws and hand them over to the government to be punished according to the laws of the State. To strengthen religious deeds, the party agreed to forbid the disciples in Mukim Padang Pusing to have a feast on Friday except for Maulid Nabi. The same applied to the feast that was held for three days after Hari Raya Haji and during the 2nd till the 7th of Shawal.Pak Cu Him had time to finish his book entitled “Fathul Jalil Wa Syifa Ghalil” by 30th June 1966. In his writings, he wrote 51 Arabic poems and summarised or discussed every couplet in Malay. This book was regarding the incredible attributes of Allah Almighty.
.
Other than this published book, there were many other notes jotted down in Malay and Arab regarding religious fatwas and sermons that were left unpublished. Many Arabic poems were discovered together with explanations about Arabic grammar that were orderly arranged in his keeping.Sahibul Fadzilah Haji Wan Ibrahim bin Haji Wan Abdul Kadir passed away on the 11 Syawal 1388H (11th January 1968). He was buried in the cemetery at the old mosque in Gajah Mati village near the grave of Tok Ayah Haji Ismail Che´ Dol.
